Deep Scratch Removal - Tempered Glass - South Bend, IN

“Winners and losers aren’t born, they are the products of how they think.”  – Lou Holtz

This was a fun little deep glass scratch removal project.  We were contacted about some scratched tempered glass in South Bend, Indiana.  The problem happened post-construction cleanup.  We suggested this would be a good project for us to come out as a glass restoration consultant and the contractor provide the labor.  Additionally, this was a union project.  We would train and make sure the scratched glass was being restored to new, as expected.  The view was rather noteworthy so quality was of utmost importance.  The contractor liked the idea of sending a consultant and equipment since it would also save a considerable amount over bringing a crew.

How many elephants worth of deeply scratched tempered glass was saved?

According to our calculations, one square foot of scratched tempered glass, 3/4 inch thick, weighs approximately  9.8 pounds.  We saved roughly 8500 sq. ft. of glass on this scratch resurfacing project in South Bend, IN.  That equates to 83,300 pounds of glass saved, or 42 tons (or approximately 10 Asian elephants!)  of flat tempered glass that didn’t find it’s way to a landfill and didn’t require all the energy required to recycle it.

Deep Scratch Repair from Tempered Glass –  Problems and Solutions

Scratch removal on glass has its fair share of hurdles.  The granite bars in front of the glass were anchored into the concrete and couldn’t be removed.  Glass scratches above and below the bar took some time to remove since it was difficult to position the sander.  Needless to say, because of lots of experience, it wasn’t too difficult to get the guys up to speed restoring and polishing the scratched glass.  Because there were so many things going on during the day, we ended up finishing the second half of this glass restoration at night.  The lighting is better and there weren’t any disturbances.  While this glass restoration consulting project proved quite challenging,  it helped us to refine both our scratched glass restoring skills but also our training skills with brand new guys.  Mission accomplished.
