Why Is Removing Scratches in Laminated Glass Better Than Replacement?

Sometimes, scratched glass panels cannot be removed.  This was the case with (2) large, laminated, soundproof glass panels in Seattle, WA. What they had, was a soundproof, recording studio for a big tech company.  The walls were actually built around the glass for sound deadening properties making removal virtually impossible. Even if removal and replacement were an option, the cost for two new panels was right around $60,000.00.  One panel only had a few deep scratches which weren’t difficult to remove.  The other one, facing the recording studio, proved to be more critical and also more difficult to restore.  There were about 6 long glass scratches, moderately deep.  Once we began the glass restoration process of sanding the glass, we had abraded about one fourth of the entire panel!  The overhead lighting would have shown up any haze or swirls so the restored glass had to be flawless.  Distortion was absolutely not going to be tolerated.  Needless to say, after about six hours, we could confidently say, mission accomplished.  All the glass scratches were removed, the glass polished back to perfection.  No distortion, no haze, no swirls.
