Tempered Scratched Glass Repair - 95 Kolbe French Doors - 5 Star Resort
What happens when the general contractor discovers 95 sandpaper scratched tempered doors on your construction project? Simple solution. Call Unscratch! This was at the beautiful Terranea Resort in Palos Verde Estates. Apparently, the painters didn’t use a very good quality masking tape because when they sanded the edges of the trim before staining, they scratched right through the tape and scratched 95 Kolbe French doors! Unfortunately, the scratches were so deep and so close to the edge, we had to have the wood trim removed and replaced afterward so that we could aggressively grind and polish all the damage right up to the edge of the glass. Of course, the contractors thought the glass couldn’t be restored! We did a little demo and made scratch-glass repair believers out of them all. No other companies would touch it because of the depth and proximity to the edge. When it comes to glass restoration and scratch removal, very infrequently do we find any type of glass damage that we can’t fix. The only thing that even comes to mind was some very heavy welding damage on some glass in San Antonio, TX. Some of the molten metal burrowed so far into the glass that you could stick a pen tip easily into the glass damage!
What circumstances would require tempered glass resurfacing?
First of all, what IS tempered glass? Tempered glass, also called safety glass, or heat strengthened glass works by creating a tension layer that will shatter into many small pieces if the glass is broken. This is safer than large pieces of glass shards. However the tension makes the glass stronger than annealed or non-tempered glass.
Because of this, the glass needs to cut into the desired size before it’s tempered. If it’s cut or drilled afterwards, it will shatter.
On this project, the wood grids were only attached to the surface of the dual pane tempered glass, so we removed them all. This way we could attack the doors as just one large glass panel instead of 8 smaller panes. And the scratches were so deep, I doubt if we could have even removed them without removing the trim first.
Therefore, deep scratch polishing from tempered glass is no different or any more difficult than from regular glass. Sand the scratches out, pre-polish the entire surface, then polish the entire panel until the haze is gone and the glass is sparkling clear again.
