What happened was, when the vinyl displays were getting trimmed in the storefront windows and display cases, they needed to be trimmed with a sort of scalloped edge.  Apparently one of the blades acted just like a glass cutter and really gouged the glass pretty deeply…everywhere!  They had another company come look at the glass and of course they wanted to replace the scratched glass!  We traveled down to beautiful Orange County, CA to check out the scratched glass and access the damage.  It was surprisingly scratched worse than we even imagined.  This wasn’t glass graffiti damage, it was just accidental glass scratches from a film trimming blade.  The pictures don’t really do justice to how deep the scratches were in the glass.  They actually were as deep as some scratched glass graffiti repair jobs we’ve done in the past.  Of course, this job, being a very expensive storefront, with bulletproof glass, had to be as close to perfect as possible which meant, no distortion whatsoever, no swirls and no haze.  What made it even trickier was that there were many halogen lights overhead in the ceiling.  If the scratched glass repairs weren’t absolutely perfect, the swirls and haze would light up like …..they were lit up! October 2011 – Glass Resurfacing is when over 75% of a piece of glass has scratches, usually from careless window cleaning or excessive fabricating debris.  Glass scratch removal or glass scratch repair is more of singular or smaller areas of scratched glass repair.  The vast majority of companies that fix scratched glass DO NOT and CANNOT resurface scratched glass.  The latest trend for our company personally is that we have been hired by our counterparts in glass restoration (not really competitors since they cannot effectively resurface scratched glass) to remove the haze and swirls they have left in some glass resurfacing jobs.  This only supports what we have been saying all along, that other glass restoration systems, or at least the ones we designed in the past are not designed for large area glass resurfacing.  We recently completely resurfaced a scratched tempered 3×6 tempered window in 38 minutes, from start to finish.  We are always striving to improve the speed, neatness and quality of our proprietary glass restoration system.

Here’s what we’re working on.  A beautiful home in Agoura Hills, Ca, just north of Los Angeles.  What apparently occurred took place on the interior glass.  The windows have interior wood trim stained and varnished.  What seems to have happened, since no one really knows, was that some stain and varnish seeped under the masking tape onto the glass surface of each window that was stained.  Normally, a simple razor blade could easily remove any stain, and spots on the glass.  Yet someone, apparently took a scotchbrite pad and proceeded to remove the excess stain and varnish from the “edges of the windows” but also much of the central areas of the windows too!  Anyone who has ever attempted scratched glass repair  knows that removing scratches from the edges is difficult at best.  There are about 30 French doors (tempered) but about 20 windows that are completely scratched that are NOT tempered which makes things extremely precarious.  Tempered glass is about 5 times stronger, not harder, than annealed glass which makes it much more resistant to breakage from heat or vibration, which occurs during glass resurfacing.  If all the windows that needed repairs were tempered, this would be an easy resurfacing job.  It’s approximately 500 sq. ft. of glass resurfacing.  So far, we’ve done 7 windows that were not tempered – no breakage!

Glass Resurfacing – What it is and what it isn’t

“Glass resurfacing” is a term that is getting thrown around the internet a lot these days.  Here’s what glass resurfacing is and what it actually means to us.  We use the term “glass resurfacing” when we “completely resurface”  or resurface 75% or more of a glass window or door.  We do not feel that doing a small section, less than 25% of a piece of glass, constitutes glass resurfacing.

Why do we bring this up?  Mainly because very few companies can effectively resurface an entire glass window or door.  Here’s what happens when most scratched glass companies attempt to resurface glass (here’s what you see when you look up into many other scratched glass repairs) .  So far, literally every window we have had to repair on this project was at least 80% resurfacing, plus, almost edge to edge, to about 1/4 and closer to the wood trim.  Impossible?  Not at all.  Time consuming? Yes.  Difficult?  Not really.   But only because we have tools specifically designed both for resurfacing but also for tight glass restoration “right up to the edge” .   Another glass repair company came and looked at the scratched glass and informed our client that ” the scratches could be removed but the windows will look wavy.”   The worst part is that we even hear that from people who claim to be able to perform “no distortion” scratched glass repair!  One more thing I forgot, many of these windows get late afternoon sun and the scratches really looked bad when the sun in on them.  If they are poorly resurfaced, you would still see haze and swirls like the picture linked to above.  So, if you need glass restoration  or resurfacing, make sure to check the “demo” window when the afternoon sun hits it and make sure you “look up into the light” to really examine the quality of the repair to make sure the glass has been thoroughly polished back to flawless clear condition.  Then call us!

Anyway, it’s a beautiful house in a beautiful area. The sunsets would sink into the silhouette of Catalina Island, it was amazing.  The majority of the really bad scratched glass was also in the windows with the awesome views.  Distortion was not an option.  There were 2 or 3 other glass guys who attempted to remove a few scratches but gave up and determined they were too deep and there were way too many of them.   We did not subscribe to their point of view!

This job looked like fabricating debris again.  These very large tempered windows were in need of some serious glass restoration!  They would catch the morning sun and the only words that came to mind while looking outside were, “scratched glass“!  The scratches were literally over the entire glass surface.  As you can see in the picture, we resurfaced almost the whole window/door.  They were approximately 48 sq. ft. each and there were seven of them.  We resurfaced around 350 sq. ft. in 2.5 days.  A little slower than usual but we had a new guy still learning.  Glass restoration on windows that get early morning/ late afternoon sun have very little room for error.  If not done flawlessly, there will be swirls and haze, only visible in the low light.  When the sun is overhead, the hazy windows might look fine.  We know of no other glass repair / restoration company able to accomplish this type of glass resurfacing that can match our results.  There is also no other scratched glass repair system that can perform at the speed and effectiveness of our specialized system.  We have made so many adaptations, adjustments, refinements, and improvements, that our glass repair system now truly stands alone on its own, with no competitor even close by.  To date, we have never lost a job out to a competitor.  We recently came to the conclusion that, we do not and will not get into a price war with any of our so called competitors.  The reason for this was simply stated.  Why should we match their price when they can’t match our quality?  The old adage has been proved true again and again, “You get what you pay for.”  So remember, “When Your View Matters – Call Unscratch the Surface!”  Often imitated – Never duplicated!

There was approximately 1500 sq ft of damaged glass. The majority of the exterior had some kind of strange widespread fine scratching on the glass.  Some of these pieces of glass were 12′ high.  Some were only 7′x7′ Fleetwood doors that would all slide out of sight to open up the home to an exquisite view of the ocean in the distance.

Also discovered were deep scratches on the master shower.  This was quite an amazing shower, especially since you could see the outside view while in the shower!  Almost like being outside!  The scratches in the 1/2 inch tempered glass came out quickly and easily without any distortion whatsoever.

The exterior did have a few areas with significant pitting from either grinding or possibly cutting masonry.  This type of glass restoration is a little more difficult and time consuming but repairable nonetheless.  While we did not reach any solid conclusion about what really caused all the glass scratches, we were able to renew the glass to like new condition, thereby restoring the awesome view.

• Use caution when removing glass scratches near the bevel.  If you’re not careful, you can change the bevel and ruin the table by creating an uneven bevel.
• Care must be taken to not leave any haze, swirls, or distortion.  These are extremely easy to see when you are almost always staring down thru the glass.
• Glass table tops are not usually tempered.  When working on scratched glass that isn’t tempered, temperature must be monitored to ensure the glass does not break.

scratched window.  It came out pretty much flawlessly.  We are scratched glass repair!  The windows looked blurry because the heavy saltwater buildup over the years.  It’s a 25 year old yacht.  We made the demo glass as close to scratch free and perfect as possible, near flawless glass repair.  No discernible distortion whatsoever.  “When your view matters – Call Unscratch the Surface”

7,000 square feet of actual fabricating debris scratched glass restoration was completed in 16 days.  All the glass was also cleaned and polished with a special glass protectant.  While we did run into some scissor lift and boom lift issues, we still managed to complete this large glass restoration project only one day off our target date.  Yates Construction is a very large national commercial builder who was very pleased with the quality of our work.  More importantly, the owner of the Mississippi Coast Convention Center was also extremely pleased.  We will most likely be doing another smaller glass restoration project in the near future for Yates construction.   Some of the issues we had to deal with were waiting for the condensation to dry off before we started on a few days.  Needless to say, we always are able to adapt and finish our large scratched glass repair projects on schedule.  Our guys were averaging around 125 sq. ft. per day each.  We lost a few men for a few days because of being ill.  In addition, we lost quite a lot of time because of the lift issues.  The boom lift starter went out on Thursday and wasn’t working again until Monday!

We know of no other company able to restore and resurface heavily scratched and damaged glass at anywhere near this rate.  I have added some additional pictures that show the severity of how scratched this glass really was.

After six days, we are moving along well.  We have a four man crew with two rookies.  Still, we are averaging about 100 sq. ft. per man per day.  We made some adjustments after day three and are increasing our averages.  We had a scissor lift die on us one day and ran into general slow down problems, which usually happens the first few days on these large scratched glass repair projects.

Grinding crew is averaging about 500 sq ft per day (250 ) while the polishing/cleaning 2 man crew is averaging about 420 sq ft per day (210 sq ft each).

We are projecting with our crew of 4 averaging between 100-150 sq. ft. per day each, we should be able to complete the brunt of the glass resurfacing in 15 work days.  We also have a custom home to do some repairs on nearby Biloxi.  We begin on Monday, June 7th, 2010.  We will be working from scissor lifts so that will slow us down somewhat.  All in all, it will prove to be challenging.  Every project we have ever done proves to have its own distinct challenges.  It usually takes 1-2 days before we get everyone working like a finely tuned machine.   Projected savings on this project over replacing the scratched glass is around $350,000.00

Please feel free to come by and check us out.  With the gulf of Mexico oil spill fiasco going on right across the road from where we will be working, it will be nice to be doing something “green” by saving the damaged glass from going into the landfill  since laminated impact glass (and windshields too) cannot be melted down and reused.  All that can be done with them is to grind them down and mix with asphalt and use for roads.  Aside from that, even if the glass was melted down again, think of how much energy is required to melt down glass.  Melting point for glass is right around 1200 degrees F.

From their description, sounds like he was using the glasweld system. He was able to “resurface” about 2 sq. ft. in about 3 hours! Many of the scratches are fairly significant on this project so its understandable. The total sq. footage of the 18 doors and windows is about 400+ sq. ft. since there are additional scratches on the inside also. The other guy said he could do the whole job in about 16 hours! Does something seem wrong with the math?! I have put in about 14 hours already into the job and still probably have 4 hours left. Needless to say, we got the job, even though we were significantly more expensive than the other guy. However, we’re still less than 50% of the replacement cost. Just another example of how our “competition” constantly “say” they can do what we can do but, in our experience, have yet to show us or anyone that they really can. builder in Mississippi about a 50 foot high scratched glass curtain wall.  Either tempered or hurricane glass but sounds like fabricating debris resurfacing job.  It’s been estimated to be about 7000 sq. ft. of damage of total of 12,000 sq. ft.  We’ll be there Tuesday (4-13-10) afternoon and probably do the demo on Wednesday (4-14-10) morning and maybe play golf after that!!  I’ve seen pictures and it looks beautiful, right on the coast!  All the glass faces the SW and catches the setting sun.  No room for error on this scratched glass repair job.  No problem.

Also, we were contacted by a builder in Aspen about a 35 million dollar home with glass scratches throughout.

Then there is a project in Edmonton, Alberta that we may go do also.

Also we were contacted by a builder in Tampa, FL about a house with 18 very badly scratched windows from fabricating debris yet again.  We’ll keep you posted.

that can barely get water on it without becoming discolored.  Therefore, we have to mask the metal off so we don’t get anything on the metal.

It was pretty warm today for spring!  Must have been 90 in the sun, which was where we found ourselves in the late afternoon.  Anyway, after a very smooth day one, we’re pretty sure we can resurface all 1020 sq. ft. of this fabricating debris damage within our 10 day schedule.  Most likely, we should be completed within 8 days.  Here are a few pictures from today.

Day 2

Moving right along.  Averaging right at 100 sq. ft. per day.  partly because of the metal around the windows, but also because this job has to be perfect.

Day 4

We’ve completed resurfacing 400 sq. ft. of scratched glass that gets direct afternoon sun.  Therefore it all has to be perfect.  No swirls or haze or any distortion is acceptable.  The metal around the windows and doors is bronze with a patina finish.  It’s supposed to last a very long time.  However, we’re trying our best not to get anything on it.  On many of the windows, we’re having to get glass scratches removed right up to about 1/16th of an inch to the edge.  This also is slowing us down a bit.  Looks like Monday or Tuesday, we’ll be attacking the monster window!  The 1500 pound, 14′ x 10′ laminated scratched glass beast! I think we can get it done in one day though.  Anyway, here are some more pictures as we move ahead.  Shooting for completion by Friday, Saturday the latest.  Then off to Monterey and Palo Alto next week!

Day 6 – March 23rd, 2010 – Tuesday

Finished the giant 10′ x 14′ yesterday.  As of Tuesday, March 23rd, we have resurfaced 790 sq. ft. of large scratched tempered glass.  Therefore our crew of  (2) is averaging around 130 sq. ft. a day or 65 sq. ft glass resurfacing each per day.  It may seem slow but another company that came in to do a “demo” window took 6 hours with 2 guys to resurface (1) 2′x4′ window.  One of our guys did the same window in 1.5 hrs!!  We will most likely finish the repairs tomorrow and clean all the windows on Thursday.

Day 7 – March 24th, 2010 – FINISHED!

We actually finished in a half a day today.  Therefore, we were able to resurface 1020 sq. ft. of fabricating debris scratched glass in 6.5 days, averaging 157 sq. ft. per day (78.5 sq. ft. per man)  A little below average but still acceptable.  Tomorrow we will clean all the windows and we’re done.  Another fabrication debris scratched glass restoration job completed.

This was a car a body shop owner restored for his lovely wife. First, we needed to remove the scratches from the windshield. They apparently had to run them without wiper blades long enough to put actual scratched glass grooves into the windshield from the wiper arms.  They were told there was no way the scratches could be removed without badly distorting the windshield and view.  We assured him this was not the case with our brand of classic car glass restoration.  We delivered!  Now we do all sorts of classic car and rare glass restoration.  We are able to take even deeply scratched original car glass and make it look as good as new – guaranteed.  Send us your classic car scratched glass and let us make a believer out of you!

This was an interesting glass restoration job we did.  This was at the beautiful Terranea Resort. Apparently the painters didn’t use a very good quality masking tape because when they sanded the edges of the trim before painting, they scratched right through the tape and scratched 95 Kolbe French doors!  Unfortunately, the scratches were so deep and so close to the edge, we had to have the trim removed and replaced so that we could aggressively grind and polish all the damage. That extra 1/2 inch really made all the difference between a mediocre repair and a great repair.   Of course, they thought it couldn’t be repaired!  We did a little demo and made scratched glass repair believers out of them all.   No other companies would touch it because of the depth and proximity to the edge.  When it comes to glass restoration and scratch removal, very infrequently do we find any type of glass damage that we can’t fix.  The only thing that even comes to mind was some very heavy welding damage.  Some of the molten metal burrowed so far into the glass that you could stick a pen tip easily into the glass damage!

The challenging part about the Terranea job was the fact that all the damaged glass had an ocean view!  Therefore, distortion, waviness, or any haze would show up very badly in the afternoon sun.  An interesting side point.  One day while working on this project, we actually saw a whale and her calf swim right by where we were working.  We were that close to the water!  It was spectacular!  Needless to say, we removed all the glass scratches and restored the glass to like new condition.  We saved approximately 75% over replacement cost.  When it comes to glass repair, glass restoration, and most all types of scratched glass damage, we are #1!  Remember, “When your view matters – Call Unscratch The Surface!”
